DISD high school students learning lifelong financial lessons

After its second year of working with high schools in the Dallas area, the 3to1 Foundation’s seminars and scholarship initiatives are gaining momentum and receiving great feedback.

Valuable lessons outside the classroom

The 3to1 Foundation, a philanthropic organization that serves the community through financial education, hosted interactive seminars for this year’s high school program. During the 2016-17 school year, the  Foundation hosted about 180 Dallas area high school students for educational programs based off of its Accumulating Wealth Seminar.

Students were introduced to investment concepts, personal tax basics and business careers through seminars crafted and presented by over 15 CWA professionals.

Segmented learning experiences catered to the student’s curriculum. Freshman were taught money growth, goal setting, budgeting, and debt managing concepts. Sophomore’s attended the 3to1 Foundation Tax Seminar which covered general wealth accumulating concepts, budgeting in college and filling out IRS paperwork for their first job.

Both new students and familiar faces from the previous school year returned for the Junior/Senior Investment Seminar, which took high-level investing concepts and put them into an interactive game. CWA Founding Partner Darrell Cain made a special appearance, and Financial Planner Hunter Satterfield presented investment concepts, behaviors and the core principles of investing.

The upperclassmen then got to practice their learnings by teaming up for the interactive investment game. The activity also helped students apply the concepts when making investing decisions and the long-term effects of their choices.

“It was a wonderful experience for the class,” Jeannette Carlson-Wahle, a teacher at DISD Townview School of Business and Management, said. “Thank you so much for spending the day with my students.”

Hard work pays off.

On Wednesday, May 23, CWA and the 3to1 Foundation presented awards to the students who wrote the three best essays in the Richest Man in Babylon essay contest. Sixty-three students submitted essays. The first, second and third place winners received monetary gift certificates.

“The Foundation’s educational concepts will serve the students for the rest of their lives,” Director Michele Mulholland said. “It’s been a pleasure to see them excel in the seminars and award those that go above and beyond through the essay contest.”

The 3to1 Foundation plans to use this momentum to expand their high school program in the 2017-18 school year. If you know of a high school in your area that would benefit from this program, contact Michele Mulholland at michele@3to1foundation.org, or visit 3to1foundation.org to sign up for their next Accumulating Wealth Seminar and donate.
